Are You a Right Fit?
“Get the Right People on the Bus” proclaimed Jim Collins in his book Good to Great and this timeless truth is still valid.
RP (Right Person) in the RS (Right Seat) is a win-win both for the organization as well as for the employee. In this blog I shall share the difference between RP and RS and how a candidate can make sure they apply for an organization and role that is a right fit for them.
RP – Right person can be defined as someone who not only is aligned with the core values of the organization but can also survive and thrive in the culture of the organization. During the interview process, effective hiring mangers assess candidates “culture fit”. I encourage candidates to research organizations they are applying at and find out about their culture and core values. Keep in mind, there is an overall organization culture but each team or function has its own unique culture driven by the leader of the team, team members and team dynamics. Ask questions during your interview process that will give you the candidate, insight into the culture and values of the organization. Finally, ask yourself openly and honestly if you are the RP for this organization?
RS – it’s equally important to have the right person in the right role. If your skills meet and exceed the basic and desired qualifications in a job description you may be applying for the right role. If your skills and passions match the responsibilities of the role, you as an employee will be self-motivated, energized, engaged and in a “state of flow”. I advise candidates to ask questions during the interview process to know more specifics about the job description. Sometimes job descriptions are generic and it is responsibility of the candidate to inquire the specific responsibilities and scope of the job they are applying for. When your strengths are aligned with the job description, you will thrive in your job, every day you will wake up energized and motivated.
In order to be in the RP and in the RS, you must have defined your professional core values and core strengths.
“When you’ve got everyone in the right seat, the entire organization can stay focused on a shared vision, working toward common goals that are designed to help the business grow and develop.” Gino Wickman.
