11:05am-11:40am EDT Starting from Scratch: Reimagining the Future of Feedback and Performance Management
General Session
In many organizations, every few years brings another round of changes to the performance management process. Reboots, revamps, and redesigns promise us a brighter evaluation future for all. Yet somehow, we remain perpetually dissatisfied.
In late 2019, Google started an effort to “reimagine the performance culture” across the entire company. It wasn’t the first time. There had been a “Perf Reboot” a few years earlier, an unnamed revamp before that, and a handful of other smaller attempts over the years. They tried redesigning the tool, redefining the expectations, reworking the ratings, but something still wasn’t quite right. The team was optimistic, however, that this time was going to be different. This time would rework the entire performance management ecosystem - from expectations to job ladders, from ratings to feedback.
As with so many large-scale projects that extended into 2020, the pandemic uprooted plans and stalled progress. But the lessons learned were invaluable and inspire us to imagine a radically different future when it comes to feedback and performance cultures.
In this session, you will learn:
- Google’s approach to performance management and how the company continues to strive for a better way to evaluate and develop their staff.
- How mechanisms of control when it comes to performance management can produce negative, unintended outcomes, and ideas for how to address them.
- A vision for the future where our feedback and performance cultures are based on the foundations of human motivation, inspiring people to do the best work of their lives.
